First responders from the Baltimore County Fire Department rushed to the 500 block of Academy Road shortly before noon on Friday, February 28, after two workers became trapped at an active construction site, officials said.
Crews worked for hours to extract the men, but one of them, identified by his family as Wilmer Mendieta Barzallo, did not survive.
Now, his loved ones are rallying to raise funds to cover his funeral expenses and transport his body back home so his mother and family can say their final goodbyes.
“This tragedy has come unexpectedly and although we try to stay strong, the costs related to his farewell are high,” his brother wrote in a GoFundMe campaign launched for his young family.
Barzallo, who was only 21 years old, leaves behind his wife and a 3-month-old son.
“His departure leaves us with immense pain,” his family wrote. “Any help will be of great help. Your support at this time means more than words can express.”
The fundraiser is seeking donations to ease the financial burden on Barzallo’s family as they navigate the devastating loss.
